WIP Wednesday Linky #7

Hey! It's beginning to look a lot like January! My Christmas tree and decorations have all been taken down and packed away. I even took down my blog's Christmas colors. The holidays are fun and all, but I'm always eager to put them behind me and get back to normal. I feel like I can finally take a deep breath and relax. : )

Anyway, here's what I'm up to ...

Ongoing Projects:
Urban Lattice Quilt Along. Someday, I would love to make a plan and stick with it. Just one time: Make plan, buy fabric, and execute said plan, with no changes. Is that too much to ask? But of course, since I had a ridiculously long time to think about my Urban Lattice Quilt before actually starting it, I just couldn't leave well enough alone.

The most urgent project on my list right now is the girl counterpart to my Modern Meadow Baby Quilt. One of these two quilts will go to a surprise-gender baby due in February, so I need to get moving on the girly one. It suddenly occurred to me that the Urban Lattice design would be a great choice for this project. That means the couch quilt I was planning to make for myself in this quilt-along has been back-burned in favor of a baby Urban Lattice in Far Far Away 2. But I'm modifying the design a bit, because I really want to showcase those adorable Heather Ross prints. I shrank the block down to 8" finished instead of 12", and my solid background strips are a lot narrower.

So far I've only made one block, so I'm having a hard time picturing how this will look when it's done. I really hope I like it. The FFA2 is already cut, so I'm kinda committed now. My background strips are Kona Bone and the lattice strips are Kona Stone.

Completed tops awaiting quilting:
Hope Valley quilt
Modern Meadow Baby Quilt
Fall Equinox (Fat Quarterly quilt-along quilt)

Still didn't do anything with these:
That Girl quilt-along
Figgy Pudding quilt
Wonky Log Cabin

T
his week's stats:
New projects - 0
Completed projects - 1
Currently in progress - 7 (down one from last week)

But enough about me—let's see your post-holiday WIPs! Link up below. Just remember to link back to me, and comment on the other links!

Potholder Extravaganza 2010

If you are related to me, friends with me, and/or worked with me or my children in some capacity this year, well, I hope you've got some pots that need holding.

Because chances are you got a couple of these from me.

It's like, you decide to make potholders for a few people. Quick and easy gift, right? Then you proceed to make the design needlessly time-consuming. (String blocks. Seriously.) And then you think of a few more people to add to the list. And before you know it, you're making a whole army of the things and you're seeing potholders in your sleep.

This pair is definitely my favorite. These went to my sister-in-law. She's a veterinarian. Even though she probably doesn't take care of a lot of 10-cent goldfish, I thought she'd appreciate this print.

I used the easy wavy-line quilting that has made several appearances in blogland recently. Just use your machine's wavy decorative stitch, set at the highest width/length possible. You move the quilt straight, the machine does the wavy action. What a great way to quilt something! So easy, and I love how it looks! I think you'll be seeing more of this from me, the original FMQ-phobe. I also need to inspect the rest of my decorative stitches (because I've got a lot of them, the vast majority of which have never been used). I wonder if there's more quilting possibilities there.

Happy Tuesday. Now go get something hot out of the oven.

As the Dust Settles ...

... I thought I'd share a few peeks at what I've been up to in the last week.

There was a little of this:

A whole lot of that:

A few fleeting moments of this:

A sprinkling of these for the people on my list:

A little Christmas present for myself:

And one from some very special people:

Hope yours was just as merry!

A Quilty 2011

As my Christmas sewing finally winds down, I'm turning my attention to the new year. And Elizabeth at Don't Call Me Betsy is hosting a listy linky for 2011 quilting goals. Fun! So without further ado, here's what's on the agenda for me:

1. Surprise: More quilts! My mom has "commissioned" me to make a king-size version of Jennifer's Intersection(s) pattern, using the fabric above. I'm also doing the girly companion for my boyish Modern Meadow baby quilt, I want to make bed quilts for Miss E. and my little niece, I still have my Urban Lattice quilt to do, and I'm thinking about joining the Bloggers' Block-A-Palooza quilt-along. And those are just my immediate plans—I guarantee a few more will get added to the list as we go along.

2. Bees. I'm starting with four bees beginning in January:
Do. Good Stitches, a charity bee that I'm thrilled to be taking part in.
{Sew} Beautiful, a modern bee with some of my bestest blogging friends. My month is November.
String Me Along, a 16-month scrap-focused bee. My month is July.
• The 3 x 6 Mini Bee.

3. Swaps. I've only done one swap so far, but I would definitely like to do a few more. I would love a mini-quilt or two to decorate the blank wall behind my sewing machine—I spend a lot of time staring at that wall. It'd be nice to have something inspirational up there! So I'm hoping to join the next Doll Quilt Swap. I'm also interested in the Pillow Talk Swap and Modern Swappers. Both look like a lot of fun.

4. A quilt-along. I would like to try running my own quilt-along sometime in 2011, based on my Hope Valley quilt above. I'm thinking of starting it in February or March (although of course you will be able to join it at any time). I may modify the design a little (possibly to make it charm-square friendly) or I may do it just as it is, above. I'm undecided—if you think you might participate, feel free to weigh in!

5. Quilting for charity. In addition to my involvement in Do. Good Stitches, I'm making a quilt for the Wrapped In Hope project by Margaret's Hope Chest. I'm also planning to make at least one quilt next year for Quilt Hope In, which benefits women and children in Haiti.

6. Holiday stuff for 2011. A tree skirt, stockings for the whole family, and a Christmas quilt. These are all things I wanted to get to this year, but didn't. 2011 will be the year for them. No, seriously.

7. Learn to free-motion quilt. I need to get over my fear of FMQ and give it another shot. I'm not sure I'll ever love it—quilting on my machine always feels like a wrestling match to me, trying to get that bulky quilt through such a small amount of space. That just doesn't strike me as much fun. But it's a skill I should have, even if I don't use it frequently.

8. Rent the long-arm quilting machine at my LQS again. I rented a long-arm twice in 2010. My first time on the long-arm was a wonderful experience (I quilted the quilt shown above, for my 1-year-old). The second time was more stressful, because I had to load the quilt onto the frame by myself, and the machine got a little cranky with me (not my fault, I swear!). But it's pretty awesome to take an unbasted, unsandwiched top and back into the store, and come out 3 hours later with a gorgeous quilt! So I would like to rent the long-arm again, and naturally, when I do, I plan to document the whole thing right here. : )

9. More finishes. For all the sewing I did in 2010, I only have five completed quilts to show for it. Two of those were sent out to a professional long-arm quilter. Outsourcing the quilting is convenient and quick, but it's certainly not cheap. And there's just something about doing a quilt entirely yourself, from start to finish, that makes the completed project that much more special. So this year, I want to finish more quilts: My goal is 12 quilts in 2011. That's one per month, on top of my bee blocks, swap commitments, and other projects! And I want to finish more of those quilts myself. I won't say all of them, but definitely more of them.

Um, is 2011 expected to be like 14 months long instead of the usual 12? Because if it's not, I don't know how I'm going to accomplish all of this. Oh well, nothing wrong with a little ambition, right? If I check off even three-quarters of the projects listed above, I'll be a happy girl.

And with that, I'm signing off until after Christmas. With Miss E. on break from school, cookies to make, presents to wrap, and a few gift projects yet to finish, I need to take the week off from blogging and concentrate on reigning in the holiday chaos. So there will be no WIP Wednesday this week. But we will return to our regularly-scheduled programming on Wednesday, Dec. 29.

Now hop over to Elizabeth's blog to see what everybody else is planning in the new year. Happy holidays to you all, and happy sewing in 2011!

Giveaway Day: We Have a Winner!

Oh, you guys. I had no idea what I was in for when I came up with this wacky idea for a giveaway. All I can say is: Thank you!! You (all 338 of you!) have made this such a fun week. In fact, I think your hilarious comments kept me from reaching total pre-Christmas meltdown. : )

At any rate, McLurky thought there was a clear winner, and I couldn't agree with him more. So congratulations ....

Carin (diplofam)!

Carin didn't just comment, she actually wrote a song! Check it out:

"Baby's Got Backing" or "I Like Big Quilts"
Sung to the tune of "Baby's Got Back" ("I Like Big Butts") by Sir Mix-A-Lot
Lyrics by Carin Vogelzang

I like big quilts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with a brightly pieced top
and some 1/8ths she wants to swap
You get sprung, wanna pull out your stash
cause you know this stuff ain't trash
And then you see her binding
You wonder where she's finding
Oh, Baby I wanna get a charm pack
or do some stack and whack
My blog peeps tried to warn me
but that quilt you got makes me so horny
Ooh, and that fussy cutting
that is really something
Well, choose me, choose me
to be your blogging groupie
I've seen your HST's
and online quilting bees
Her seams are first class
as is her bias
I'm tired of the magazines
saying modern quilts are the thing
Take the average quilter's man
and ask him that
She gotta pack a nice backing
So fellas (Yeah!) fellas (Yeah!)
Has your wifey got the batting (Heck Yeah!)
Tell em to quilt it (quilt it!) quilt it (quilt it!)
Show that crazy quilt
Baby got backing!
Baby got backing!

McLurky has this to say about Carin's entry: "Anyone who can successfully combine Sir Mix-A-Lot and quilting surely deserves a prize of some sort. Also, it was dirty enough for me." High praise indeed. : ) I have this to say about Carin's entry: Brilliant! Hilarious! So deserving of the AMH fat quarters! Thank you for the laughs, Carin!

And FYI, when she's not writing quilting-related parodies of '90s rap songs, Carin runs the amazing charity Margaret's Hope Chest. They have a wonderful project called Wrapped In Hope, which provides birthday quilts to children of prisoners.

Carin has a long list of kids in need, and you can sign up to make a quilt for a specific child in 2011. In fact, I just signed up for one myself, and already have a vision of what I'm going to make for 12-year-old Alissa. What a great way to use our talents to make some deserving kids feel special. Click here to sign up to make a quilt yourself.

But back to my giveaway: There were many comments that made the hubs and I laugh, so I have to point out a few honorable mentions as well. No, you guys don't get a prize, just ... notoriety?

PDX Bride said: "I love those small squares you are cutting, are those pasties?"

Melissa's husband thought fat quarters were called "fatty quarts," and Hillbilly Handiwork's husband went into a quilt store and asked for the "Pop Tart" that they had on hold for her, instead of a turnover. Gotta love these guys, right?

Thanks to Madhatcher's comment, I don't think I'll ever look at a mug rug the same way again. : )

And finally, mabblab suggested that when I'm having a bad day, the hubs should get me a bundle of fat quarters instead of roses. I am fully on board with that plan ... McLurks, are you listening?

Thank you all for entering, and for making Giveaway Day tremendously fun! I wish I could reply personally to all of you! But you know, bad time of year and all. Carin, an email is on its way to you.

Reorganizing

So remember how I said I've been making some changes in my sewing room?

It all started with this Follower Friday post on Gen X Quilters. When I saw Kati's amazing design wall, I thought, that it's—why haven't I made one of those yet?

The thing is, I've been sewing in a room that was set up more than six years ago as an office, so that I could work from home full time. After I had my girls, I worked less and less and sewed more and more. But I guess I never stopped and took a hard, objective look at my space and how I was using it. I now spend 95 percent of my time in that room sewing, but sewing stuff took up maybe 20 percent of the space. I mean, check out that gigantic corner workstation desk. What on earth was that still doing in there?? It was a handy spot for stacking things (and I've got a lot of stacks), but it also commanded a hefty chunk of real estate. Including valuable wall space that could become a design wall. Duh.

So the corner desk, plus a whole lot of other officey stuff, was finally banished to the basement this week. And in its place: A lovely flannel sheet nailed to the wall! I can't believe I didn't do this earlier! Too bad I'm still using that awful office chair. Sitting in it makes me feel more like the CEO of a bank than a mommy working on a quilt.

I also decided my thread, needles, and other notions deserved better than just being dumped all together into a giant basket. There was stuff in the bottom of that basket that I didn't even remember I had, because it was too hard to find. A cosmetics organizer from Bed Bath & Beyond seems to fit the bill (top shelf). Now I can see almost everything I have, and the basket is perfect for my rulers. The middle shelf is where I'm keeping tops that are awaiting quilting.

I love my new and improved sewing room! I don't have as much desk space now for my stacks, but that's what the floor is for, I guess. It just goes to show that every once in a while, you have to try to look at your space with fresh eyes and think about how it could be used better. Just because you've always used it in a certain way doesn't mean you still should.

WIP Wednesday Link-Up

Before I get to WIP Wednesday, welcome to the new followers I've gained thanks to my Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day post! I didn't even have to bribe you all with extra chances to win! You guys rock! : )

Anyway, I like to do this weekly linky called WIP Wednesday. This is where you get to show off the half-dones, the almost-theres, or even the projects that only exist in your own head. Personally, I like to list all of my WIPs, because I'm OCD like that. It helps me keep track of my progress and feel like I've actually accomplished something. Also, when I'm feeling scattered (Scattered? Who, me?), I can look at my list and know exactly what to focus on. But if you don't want to list all your WIPs, you can pick one or two projects to highlight. It's your call. And your WIPs don't have to be quilts, any sewing project is fair game.

The only rules are: 1) Please link back to my blog in your WIP Wednesday post. Make it easy on yourself and grab the button in my sidebar. Put it in your own sidebar, and you won't have to remember every week! 2) Please comment on at least one or two of the other links.

Got it? Okay, what are you waiting for? Join in and link up!

Ongoing Projects:

Scrappy Mystery Gifts, times 12
My gifty assembly line has been banging 'em out this week. Admittedly, I've only completed 7 out of 12 of these little items. My goal was to have 10 of 12 done by now. But it's not like I've just been sitting around reading crazy-hilarious giveaway comments (well, okay, I've been doing a little of that). So I'm okay with my progress here.

Quilt-along quilts
My Urban Lattice and That Girl quilt-along quilts are getting really sad and lonely. I've promised I will pay more attention to them next week. Hopefully they won't start acting out and smoking cigarettes in the mall parking lot while I'm busy lavishing attention on their cute, scrappy younger siblings up there.

Miscellaneous Other
Four different versions of family photo calendars for various relatives: Check. Christmas shopping: Check. Christmas cards: Totally almost checked. Top-to-bottom reorganization of sewing room (great timing, right?): Check. More on my new and improved sewing space tomorrow.

Completed tops awaiting quilting:
Hope Valley quilt
Modern Meadow Baby Quilt
Fall Equinox (Fat Quarterly quilt-along quilt)

Still didn't do anything with these:
Yeah, let's not even go there. You know it's the same as last week.

Giveaway Day

Well, here's living proof that my husband actually reads this blog: For the past week or so, every time I've shown him something I'm working on, he says he thinks it's under-wonked. LOL. Of course, most of the things I show him aren't meant to be wonky, so obviously he must mean that as a compliment. : ) Another time, I showed him a block I had just finished piecing, and he responded by telling me I was "real handy with my iron." That one was courtesy of Monika's comment on this post. (So, see, he even reads all of your comments!)

Anyway, as I'm sure most of you are aware, today is Giveaway Day on Sew Mama Sew. I don't know if I sent my email in time to be included in their links, but what the heck, I'm giving something away anyhow. Better odds for all of you, my loyal followers!

I'm giving away this soft, cozy, delicious bundle of Folksy Flannel fat quarters. Eight fat quarters of Anna Maria Horner goodness. To win, all you have to do is say hi to my husband McLurky here, and suggest some other random quilty terms that he can use to compliment me in equally absurd and out-of-context ways. Because I have to admit, I find it kind of amusing myself. And just to keep things interesting, the hubs will choose the winner. Whatever comment he likes best takes the prize. I can't really give you much advice, other than to say that he's a goof, and he knows nothing about quilting. But he's a well-intentioned goof, and he's MY goof. Also, I can't remember the last time he complained about my fabric purchases. : )

You can comment through midnight, Dec. 17. He will pick a winner on Dec. 18. Happy giveaway day! Hope you all win big!

WIP Wednesday Link-Up

Welcome back to Work-In-Progress Wednesday! What have you got for me this week, ladies? Link up below to show off your WIPs!

New Projects:
Mystery Gift Project, times 12
This is my scrappy project that I'm making as small gifts for, like, half the people I've ever met. Three are done, nine left to go. My goal is to make one per day until they're done, which means, come next week's WIP Wednesday, I should only have two left. Hold me to that!

Ongoing Projects:
Urban Lattice Quilt Along at Me? A Mom?
I love this quilt! And all I've done so far is mark my scrapbooking paper! : ) But seriously, even just marking the paper was kinda fun, in its own weird, tedious way. I really, really, really hope to have more time for this one in the coming week.

That Girl ... That Quilt Along quilt
Well. I wonked my blocks. And I don't know—I think I may have under-wonked. When you think about it, that might be the worst thing that could happen when you're doing a wonky quilt. Because people might not realize the wonkiness is intentional, and will instead think I'm just a really crappy sewer.

But at least I may have set a new world record for most use of the word "wonky" in a single paragraph (and in some very creative new forms, at that).

STILL didn't do anything with these:

Figgy Pudding quilt
Wonky Log Cabin

Completed tops STILL awaiting quilting:
Hope Valley quilt
Modern Meadow Baby Quilt
Fall Equinox (Fat Quarterly Quilt Along quilt)

T
his week's stats:
New projects - 1. But it's a gift! That makes it okay!
Completed projects - 0 sewing projects completed. HOWEVER, I did design a blog header and three buttons, put up my Christmas tree, decorated the rest of my house for Christmas, and do some serious shopping. So there. : )
Currently in progress - 8, up 1 from last week.

What I've Been Up To

Oh, you mean besides stressing about Christmas?

Most of the things on my to-do list at the moment don't involve sewing (shopping, Christmas cards, shopping, photo calendars, shopping). But I am making different variations of the same very small gift for no less than TWELVE people this year.

It's getting pretty scrappy up in here. Photos of these guys to come, after the holidays.

Quilting Hope Into Their Lives

Like many of you, I read this post a few weeks ago by Allison of Cluck Cluck Sew. Like many of you, it (and the blog Allison links to) left me completely heartbroken. Like many of you, I thought of my own babies, who were at the time sound asleep in warm beds, with full stomachs, under the same roof as parents who love them to the moon and back. The idea of either of my girls being subjected to the unbearable sadness that so many kids in Haiti have faced was just devastating.

But after a little reflection and sadness, I have to admit, I just went about my evening as usual. It's a horrible situation, of course, but what can I do?

Tracey from traceyjay quilts read that post too. But unlike many of us, she decided to do something about it, right then and there.

And so, Quilt Hope In was born. Quilt Hope In will be an Etsy shop where anyone can put handmade items up for sale, and all proceeds from those sales will be donated directly to Heartline Ministries in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Any of us—all of us—can use our talents to help, through Quilt Hope In.

We've all got a few extra quilts or other handmade items hanging around, right? For those of us who aren't up for an Etsy shop of our own, what better way is there to find a good home for your quilts and raise money for a worthy cause? If you would like to help, start by going to the Quilt Hope In blog and becoming a follower. And think about items you might be willing to sell through the store. (Are you participating in 100 Quilts for Christmas? This might be a great spot for yours!)

Tracey is hoping for a grand opening of the Etsy store sometime around Dec. 12 - 15. You can also visit Tracey's blog for more information, and stay tuned for more updates.

Holiday Swappage

So I picked up an overflowing bag of mail yesterday afternoon, collected by my next-door neighbor while we were out of town. Amidst all the junk mail and bills was an early Christmas gift from my Ho Ho Holiday Swap partner, A.J. Dub of Harriet the Homemaker Strikes Again. She sent me not one, not even two, but three beautiful Christmas ornaments!

The first one I opened was this amazing little dynamo of a quilt block ornament! I was completely blown away by it! Those half-square triangles are literally half an inch square. HALF AN INCH, people. Can you imagine piecing something that itty-bitty? Because I sure can't. : ) And just look at those teeny hand stitches! Such incredible workmanship, and it's adorable.

But it gets even better: This ornament is, of course, based on my Kissy Fish quilt, one of my all-time favorite quilts, as well as my first tutorial. How thoughtful is that? I really was touched by this ornament. Not only is it meaningful to me personally, since it's a quilt block I designed, but every time I look at it I'll think of all the wonderful blog friends I've made (one in particular!), and how nice it is to have you all. It will have a place of honor on my tree.

As if that wasn't enough, there were two other ornaments in the package—this pair of lovely little flower ornaments.

And she even threw in these adorable handmade Christmas cards as a little extra.

All I can say is, I was wowed by this swap package and I think I definitely got the better end of the exchange. : ) Thank you, thank you, thank you to A.J. Dub, what a delightful surprise after a long trip (and so nice to open while dealing with the aftermath of overly tired children). For more about A.J., go visit her blog.

Now, wanna see what I sent her? I'm almost embarrassed to show it to you after what she sent me!

Yep. It's a bird. I'm obsessed. It's kind of strange, because I don't especially care for birds in real life, but give me a fabric bird and I'm all about it. : ) This one is based on the free "Pretty Bird" pattern from Pillow and Maxfield. I shrunk the pattern down about 70%.

I had grander plans than this. I thought this bird looked vaguely partridge-ish, so I wanted to make a second ornament—a pear. Then A.J. would have had a partridge and a pear in her tree. : ) But the final week before I left on my trip got a little crazy and unfortunately that fell through the cracks. Sorry, A.J.! Well, now that I've received her package, I think I definitely owe her a pear!

Thanks to AnneMarie from Gen X Quilters for organizing such a fun swap. I hope it will become an annual thing! Happy (early) holidays to all the holiday swappers out there!

WIP Wednesday Link-Up

More like "Lack-of-Progress Wednesday" this week, at least for me. But of course, I was gone basically the entire week. And I'm hardly complaining, because we had a great trip to Florida—complete with beautiful weather, delicious food, good company, and lots of fun family bonding time. Miss E. spent so much time in my mom's pool that I'm surprised her hair isn't green. Not a bad way to spend a Thanksgiving, if you ask me.

So anyway, no changes from me this week. But I'm looking forward to getting back into my sewing room in the coming week. And I hope all of you logged some serious sewing time over the long holiday weekend and have lots of good progress to show off. So link 'em up, ladies! Rules are here, if you need a reminder. Have a wonderful week.
