My Do. Good Stitches Asterisk quilt is done! This quilt is a little different—a bit more improvisational—than what I usually do, but I totally love how it turned out.
I wanted a lot of design variety in the finished quilt, and I definitely got it! Some of these blocks are kind of genuius twists on the asterisk theme, don't you think? And Kate of Needle and Spatula was even kind enough to write this post about how to adjust the width of the asterisk strips and still keep the strips lined up. Thank you, Kate! Very handy.
I made four of these blocks myself. Of the four, this one is definitely my favorite. Too bad I miscalculated when I was making it, and the block ended up 1/2" too small! Darn that quilty math. So I added that weird strip of Kona Coal around two sides. It works with the improvisational feel of the quilt, but I still would have liked it much better without it! Oh well.
So this one is off to Wrap Them In Love. Thank you, Love Circle, for all of these fun blocks. I really enjoyed putting this quilt together. And this quilt concludes my participation in Do. Good Stitches for the time being—I'm taking a little break from that bee while I concentrate on other commitments. But I hope to rejoin it again soon!

P.S. I did something a little different with my quilt pictures this time—these were all taken before I washed and crinkled the quilt. While I love love love a snuggly crinkly quilt, I'm not sure they photograph as well—the crinkles tend to obscure the details, especially in pictures. So what do you think? Do you prefer to see quilt pictures like the ones above, pre-crinkled? Or would you rather see the quilt as it will actually look when it's in use? (Since I definitely plan to continue washing and crinkling my quilts—it's just a matter of when in the process I should take the pictures.) I would love to hear your thoughts on this!

This is so fun and pretty! I am impressed that you were able to quilt it on your home machine doing FMQ - I need to practice more I guess!
ReplyDeleteSuch a gorgeous quilt--and it looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI think taking pictures before quilting with a detailed quilt like this makes it easier to see everything. Maybe one picture at the end of it post-wash, just to see at the lovely crinkling? Beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteLee, it came together beautifully! I am inspired by your lovely stippling too. :)
ReplyDeleteBEautiful quilt!! I love how improv it feels too! Way to go!
ReplyDeleteAs for pictures - I always take mine before washing, for that exact reason. You can see the details batter. I agree with hollymade, though - maybe one or two after as well.
Great job!!
Beautiful quilt. Rather nice to be able to see the quilting, but love the crinkly look too.
ReplyDeleteOMG! It's beautiful! Don't know how you could give it away!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful! I just love the colors chosen. I would like to see the quilts before washing. I like to see the quilting and sometimes the snuggly crinkled look makes it hard to see. Thanks for the quilty inspiration!
ReplyDeleteHallie
So lovely Lee! The backing is just perfect with this quilt. The blocks you added are also so pretty. I like the one floating sideways in orange.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I like seeing the pictures pre-washing too.
This quilt it lovely.
ReplyDeleteOh, pre-and post wash please - I'm greedy like that!
It turned out just great! And thanks for asking the pre and post washing questions, I've been thinking on that lately and wondering! I think personally I like seeing quilts both ways, where possible :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt!! I love the crinkly look (and feel) but pics before and after would be fun!! TFS
ReplyDelete~Terry~
This is awesome! Yes, I think washing before photos does tend to make the pictures not as nice. And btw, you did a great job with your FMQ. Looks perfect.
ReplyDeleteWhat a warm & fine colors!! Such an inspiration from the winter sunset and the design coming together. Very lovely (I try pictures before washing, when I'm not forgetting it...)
ReplyDeleteWow! I love your quilt Lee....your quilting is beautiful; so even everywhere and relaxed...great job on it. There isn't a thing not to like about it. I wish I was at the receiving end of it though. I also wish I could be in on all of these swaps and QALs...just not enough hours in the day. But I love following what you are doing...don't stop!!
ReplyDeleteOh it's gorgeous! Love the colours and design you chose :o)
ReplyDeleteSo enjoying the colors, the backing fabric, the fabrics, placement...this is incredibly beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!! Your stippling is perfect! I don't think I have a preference whether or not they are washed or not.
ReplyDeleteSo so gorgeous, Lee! I love pre- and post-crinkle photos but I agree that the pre-crinkle shots often show the detail of the quilting stitches a bit more clearly.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI actually prefer the look of my quilts after they have been laundered so that's when the pictures are taken.
Beautiful colors! I think you can see the quilting a bit more before it is washed, which is nice.
ReplyDeleteI am FMQ nut and so I like pre wash pictures- I think post wash just doesn't do FMQ justice, practically makes a stipple disappear in all the crinkles, you do such beautiful work I am glad I got to see it as it is. The quilt is beautiful by the way and I really am impressed that it is going to charity- what a nice thing!
ReplyDeleteWow looks amazing!! It's great to know so many people came together to help make it! It's definitely better to see the picture before its washed. That way we get to see all the details in the quilting.
ReplyDeleteDo a before and after picture =D
OH MY! I think it's quite fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! hmmmmm.....perhaps a good bee idea.
ReplyDeleteI do both pictures - pre and post crinkle, as the wash really does make it hard to photograph some of the piecing details. And sometimes the quilting details are lost until you wash it.
Just read the tutorial---love this block and since I'm on vacation next week I see lots of asterisks in my future! Yours turned out awesome and what a great way to use up scraps...thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Love the colors, it has a warm feeling. I think pictures before washing show the detail better but love the look of washed. When a quilt has been washed it makes me think that someone loves it and uses it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks lovely, great colours. I like to see the before washing photos, but it would also be nice to see the difference once it has been washed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful asterisk quilt. Love the colors! Love the colors and the variety of sizes of each asterisk.
ReplyDeleteLove the colors, this turned out beautifully! I do find a pre-wash picture looks better sometimes. I agree on it being hard to see the details well when it's all crinkly. Though I love crinkly!
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous! Probably one of my most favorite I've seen, and the color palette is perfect for these cold winter days.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I am just begining at FMQ and can't wait till my stipples look so pretty.
ReplyDeleteWell done, love your new quilt, very creative, bright and cheery.
ReplyDeleteI love the crinkly quilt look. However, I really enjoy the pre-washing pictures on blogs. I get to see the quilting really well.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Lee! I love that colour combination. I usually photograph my quilts pre-wash because I like the crisper look. I did wash one recently before photographing it and it came out of the dryer with major piling. You always get great photos of your quilts so I don't think it matters which way you do it!
ReplyDeleteThe colors in this quilt are so happy. I love everything about it and the fact that it is going to a deserving charity is even better.
ReplyDeleteI usually like washed quilt photos, but the quilting on this is so great that it almost looks crinkled already.
Love this quilt!! I really like seeing them photographed pre-crinkled - I think you get a better look at the details & the quilting
ReplyDeleteSo cool! This was a great idea for a bee quilt.
ReplyDeleteI agree that you can see a lot more of the quilting detail before washing. I kinda like to photograph mine after washing because it masks some of the imperfections. :)
This quilt is really beautiful, I am in love. I prefer to see pictures after washing or even better is if you show some of each.

ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely quilt. I didn't think I liked asterisk quilts until I saw yours. It's beautiful. Love the colours too and the improv look.
ReplyDeleteOh this is lovely. And I really enjoy seeing the stitching on the quilt before it is washed. To me it is clearer.
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is beautiful. Thanks for sharing the tutorial. Hugs
ReplyDeleteThe color palette is stunning- and i love the variety of asterisks. I love crinkled washed quilts, but, the ability to see the details pre-wash is pretty nice...
ReplyDeleteLee this has to be one of my favorite quilts on your blog! I love the colors and the look of those blocks all together! Beautiful!! Kris
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is just beautiful Lee and off to one lucky new home! I also usually take my pics before crinkling, for those exact reasons!
ReplyDeleteNice quilt. Love love love the backing fabric. I just got the magazine with your chain quilt in it. I loved it enough to buy the magazine, I don't buy them very often but I want to eventually make this one. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteLove it! My favorite block is the one with the little strips of kona coal on two sides!
ReplyDeleteIt turned out so beautiful! Such a unique design idea, and great color choices, too. :)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this!
ReplyDeleteThis turned out great, Lee! It's so fun seeing the quilts come together with everyone's different blocks. And I'm glad that my post was helpful, thanks for the shout out :)
ReplyDeleteFantabulous!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh. <--- The sound of me exhaling after seeing your quilt! Oh Lee, it's so beautiful!
