Craft Book Month: Candy Coated from Sunday Morning Quilts

Candy Coated from Sunday Morning Quilts
Thanks for stopping by for my day on the Craft Books Month blog hop! My project is "Candy Coated," the cover quilt from Sunday Morning Quilts by Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison.

If you haven't picked up this book yet, you really should. I think I love every single pattern in there. So many I want to make, so little time! (There aren't many books out there I can say that about.) In fact, it was difficult to choose just one for this post. Fortunately, this quilt is going to be a wedding gift, so I ended up choosing the one I thought the happy couple would like the most and started gleefully chopping up my scraps.

Candy Coated quilt
I followed the pattern in the book to a T, and that's rare for me these days. (Another sign of how much I like this book!) I stuck with the three-color-scheme of the original quilt (although I used a different trio of colors), I cut all my string scraps to the sizes from the book, and I even quilted it the same as the original, with wavy lines going in the opposite direction of the strings.

Candy Coated quilt The result is a fabulous scrap quilt that's still modern and not overwhelming scrappy. : ) I pretty much cleared out my gray scrap bin on this one—in fact, I even had to supplement a bit from my stash. And this was such a fun, low-pressure project to sew. Sewing strings together in this way is low-key and doesn't require a whole lot of thought or concentration, and that's exactly the kind of project I needed last week.

Candy Coated - the back The back is just pieced together sections of coordinating fabric from my stash.

Candy Coated from Sunday Morning Quilts
I think it's a great fall quilt. : )

Sunday Morning Quilts is really growing on me! I do a lot of sewing quilt tops for my daughter's church quilting group, and they are constantly giving me projects that someone started and never finished, so I cut them up to give them new life. Your project really fits the bill. The quilt is great, and so is your blog. Thanks for jump-starting my Monday.

I've finally ordered this book after checking it out twice from my local library. I just need to have it.

I love that color combination! It's not one I would have picked out, at least, not until I saw this all quilted it up. I love it.

Love, love, love your version of the quilt! The colors are perfect! This quilt (and the photo on the cover of the book) had me sold before I even saw any of the other projects in it! And I agree-- it's one of the few books I've seen where I really want to make a bunch of the quilts!

I think I seriously need to add some grey prints to my stash. What greys would you not be able to live without? I love the Denyse Schmidt leaf grey... but what are some of the others? I worry about choosing greys online as it is hard to judge whether they are too cool or warm.

Hey! I feel like I very rarely see the quilt that someone's quilt is based on, along with their work. Thanks so much for showing that. Sometimes I have really hard time seeing a quilt on a book cover and trying to imagine it with other fabrics. Love your color scheme.

Your quilt is terrific. I like how showed us in a few easy steps how to get a great quilt from a terrific book (I had that one too!). You've almost persuaded me to start cutting up my scraps and get one underway. First things first, though, and that's finishin up the Portuguese Tile Quilt. As soon as class is over tomorrow. . .
